How HackerTube works
HackerTube is an independent video discovery site built from a public dataset of videos linked in Hacker News discussions. Rather than rank a video by views or watch time, the source data tracks when different readers recommend it across separate months. That history helps surface talks, courses, explainers and documentaries that people have returned to over the years.
Search across titles, channels, topics, tags and the context readers shared. Browse areas such as software engineering, systems, security, science, history, AI and design. Video pages show a summary, the recommendation signal and a link to the original Hacker News discussion, so you can inspect the context for yourself.
A recommendation is a useful signal, not a guarantee. Some source records cite a video without endorsing it. Summaries and topic labels in the public dataset were generated with AI and can be imperfect. The linked discussion is the best place to judge what a reader meant.
This independent implementation uses the HackerTube public dataset exported on October 31, 2026, under ODC-By 1.0. Credit is provided to HackerTube and the open-index/hacker-news dataset; comments remain the work of their authors. This site is not affiliated with HackerTube.org, Hacker News, YouTube, Google, Y Combinator or Andrej Karpathy. Likes and viewing history stay in this browser. Playback is embedded from YouTube and follows YouTube's own experience.
The source collection keeps videos linked by at least three different readers in at least three separate months. Its score reflects recurring recommendations and stronger endorsements; it is not a quality guarantee. Some records are neutral references, citations, jokes or criticism, so check the stance and linked thread before treating a mention as an endorsement.
Browse by area, topic, type, level and shelf life. The public export does not include reliable durations or view totals, so this site leaves those fields out rather than guessing. Likes, Watch later and viewing history stay in this browser. When you choose to play a video, playback is provided by YouTube.
