Frequently asked questions

Answers about the HackerTube catalog, data source and this independent implementation.

How does HackerTube work?

The public dataset records videos linked in Hacker News discussions, along with recommendation context, topics and summaries. This site lets you browse a selected catalog by topic and inspect links to original discussions.

Who created HackerTube?

The original HackerTube.org project credits the idea to Andrej Karpathy and describes work coordinated with Claude models. This independent implementation was built separately from that project.

Is this the official HackerTube.org site?

No. This is an independent implementation using the public dataset released by HackerTube. It is not affiliated with or endorsed by HackerTube.org or Hacker News.

Can I watch videos without ads?

No ad-free playback is promised. Videos open or play through YouTube, which controls its player, cookies and advertising.

Where does the data come from?

The catalog comes from HackerTube's public data export, derived from the open-index/hacker-news archive and licensed under ODC-By 1.0. Individual comments remain the work of their authors and link back to Hacker News.
